.I INTRODUCTION
#self-esteem #one's #attitude #appreciates #self-approval #favorable #unfavorable #worth
Self-esteem can be described as a person’s overall sense of his or her value or worth. It is considered a sort of measure to evaluate “values, approves of, appreciates, prizes, or likes him- or herself."
As per Morris Rosenberg, self-esteem is regarded as one’s attitude toward oneself. He thus defined it as a “favorable or unfavorable attitude toward the self.”.
It comprises of a variety of beliefs about yourself, such as the awareness of your own appearance, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors.
VARIOUS FACTORS THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO SELF-ESTEEM INCLUDE:
1. Personality
2. Age
3. Life Experiences
4. Health
5. Thoughts
6. Social Circumstances
7. Reaction of others
II. CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE WITH HIGH SELF-ESTEEM
They possess more confidence in themselves and are able to build and are more confident that they are capable to excel in their respective fields. They strive to improve and avoid negative talks.
People who possess high self-esteem generally give clear ideas about what they want or need and are able to communicate those needs and wants to others empathetically and clearly. They feel that they are worthy of love , rely on their own judgment and do not require external validation
It is seen that people with high self-esteem emerge as confident communicators, which is important to build and nurture strong relationships.
They do not blame others , accept life as it is and trust the process.
They believe that change is inevitable ; and we need not escape but take it as an opportunity to discover ourselves.
Believe that healthy relationship is based on clear-communication and trust,
accepting people as they are and being non-judgmental is the key to long -lasting relationships.
They know the purpose of their life and more focused towards life.
They have a good sense of humor and can laugh at themselves.
They have a more optimistic attitude towards life, and are open-minded.
They are able to take care of them physically, mentally, and spiritually and are free from ailments.
III. FEATURES OF LOW SELF-ESTEEM PEOPLE
Decision for perfectionism, which leads to constant frustration or underachievement when perceived perfection is not achieved.
Feelings of insignificance.
Negativity about life and inability to enjoy life.
Excessive will to please others
Indecisive nature due to fear of failures
IV. FACTS ABOUT SELF-ESTEEM
It becomes indispensable to throw light on the facts that will leave us astonished
Let us discuss a few.
Low self-esteem is linked to violence, low academic success, suicide, teen pregnancy, and school dropout rates (Misetich & Delis-Abrams, 2003).
2.About 44% of girls and 15% of boys in high school are attempting to lose weight (Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, n.d.).
3. Seven in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or don’t measure up in some way (Dove Self-Esteem Fund, 2008).
4. Nearly all women (90%) want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance (Confidence Coalition, n.d.).
5. The vast majority (81%) of 10-year old girls are afraid of being fat (Confidence Coalition, n.d.).
6. About one in four college-age women have an eating disorder (Confidence Coalition, n.d.).
7. Only a small amount of fraction .i.e 2 % of women think they are beautiful (Confidence Coalition, n.d.).
8. Absent fathers, poverty, and a low-quality home environment have a negative impact on self-esteem (Orth, 2018).

V.RESEARCH ON SELF-ESTEEM:
Astonishingly, there are many results and studies that have been carried out to study self-esteem. Self-esteem was proven to be a strong predictor of life happiness in collectivist China. (Chen, Cheung, Bond & Leung, 2006). They ended up with the conclusion that collectivist cultures and self-esteem also had an effect on resilience with teenagers. Teenagers who experienced low self-esteem had a higher sense of hopelessness and had low resilience (Karatas, 2011). In more individualistic cultures, teenagers who were taught to depend on their beliefs and behaviors and felt open to expressing their opinions had more resilience and higher self-esteem (Dumont & Provost, 1999). Elementary school programs that throw light on improving self-esteem through short, classroom-based sessions also have a positive impact on students’ self-esteem, as well as reducing problem behaviors and strengthening connections between peers.( Park & Park, 2014)
VI. Understanding that Self-Esteem is a Part of Self-Concept:
Although it is a component of self-concept, self-esteem is not the same as self-concept. Self-concept, as opposed to self-theory, which makes us inflexible and prevents us from embracing new ideas, is the view that enables us to determine who we are from various sources around us, mostly internal and external variables.
Self-esteem and self-worth are related concepts, but they differ slightly (albeit significantly): self-worth is the broader universal understanding that we are valuable human beings deserving of affection, whereas self-esteem is how we think, we feel, and believe about ourselves.
VII. Understanding the difference between self-esteem and self-confidence
Although self-esteem and self-confidence are used interchangeably, it is important to reconsider the context in which they are used. Self-esteem is a measure of one's belief , they define us that as a person we are worthy of love. For example," I feel I am a good human being , worthy of attention."
Confidence is the ability to succeed in certain situations and linked to situations, performances . Confidence is the way to stand-out amongst the competitors.
VIII. SELF-COMPASSION IS NOT SELF-ESTEEM
Finally, #self-esteem is also not self-compassion. Being self-compassionate is an internal journey that encompasses being nice and forgiving ourselves. Self-compassion enables us to introspect and is part of self esteem which can lead to a healthy sense.
IX. PRACTICAL STEPS TO BOOST SELF-ESTEEM:
1. Set Practical Goals:
It’s crucial to set small, reachable, and achievable goals that are within your power. For example, setting an extremely high expectation or an expectation that someone else will change their behavior virtually converts you to a failure, through no fault of your own.
2. Stop being a perfectionist.
Acknowledge both your accomplishments and mistakes. Nobody is perfect, and trying to be one will only lead to disappointment and unnecessary burden upon individuals. Focus on progress rather than perfection to free and focus your energy on your goals.
3. Discover your life: Life is a journey where you will be subjected to trials and errors, but you have to discover yourself with zeal.
4. Adjust your self-image: We all change as we age and grow, and we must keep up with our ever-changing selves if we want to set and achieve meaningful goals.
5. Don't compare your life with others: The grass is always greener on the other side; stop blaming, stop criticizing, and instead learn, grow, and live the life you always wanted.
X. Conclusion: Thus, we can state maintaining self-esteem is a journey that encapsulates patience, self-compassion, and consistent effort. If we are able to recognize our worth and not be a victim. Self-esteem is not about perfection, but it is about progress. We must truly accept ourselves as we are, and by molding ourselves, we are able to achieve goals.
